His birthday is not until 10 days later, though. We didn't really plan it that way, but it's the only time his Godmother could be there. She teaches in another state and has spring break right now. We didn't even find that out until the Sunday before last, giving us (and the other guests) only 2 week's notice. I've been feeling the burn, running around town trying to get stuff done. That and the time change has me tired, tired, tired. I want a nap!Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-10768418872442780422007-03-12T13:39:00.001-06:002007-03-12T14:02:00.516-06:00Time ChangeI both love and loathe the springtime time change. I love it because I don't get to take a walk until the late afternoon (5:30 or later), and I don't like walking in the dark. However, it always takes me at least a week to get used to the change. My body does not do well with it at all. As I type, I am ready to sleep, and it's only 3:00!

In other news, the cake was dry, and the icing was wet. Blech--it looks like the saga continues...Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-14137284119351389812007-03-10T14:39:00.000-06:002007-03-10T14:46:36.465-06:00CakeI am making the cake for my son's first birthday. It's a 3-D ducky cake. I already did a run-through, with some pretty disastrous results. Well, the cake turned out fine, but my husband insisted that we try fondant instead of regular icing. I tried telling him that it wouldn't work. It's hard enough getting the fondant to look nice on a perfectly cylindrical or box-shaped cake. Let's just say that poor duck ended up looking like it belonged in ancient Egypt, lol!

I'm doing another run-through this weekend though--this time with buttercream icing (which is the suggested topping that the cake pan came with. I'm making a chocolate rum cake with green icing, a kinda tribute to St. Patty's Day. If it comes out nice, it's going to a party tomorrow.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-11782764849704556932007-03-07T22:18:00.000-06:002007-03-07T22:46:32.163-06:00A-Ha! A Toshiba EnlightenmentMy baby boy loves my laptop. He likes to "type" and look at the pretty images that appear. It's very cute--most of the time. Sometimes he yanks keys off, and he has even managed to find odd shortcuts I never knew existed. For months, my baby has managed to change my screen resolution just by banging on my keyboard. It would be an annoyance except it's just too freaking amazing to me. I tried looking it up online to see if I could find the magic combination of keys that could form such an operation. I've looked through pages of Google results, but no one has written about it. I did find out that there is a utility that can be used to keep everything the same proportion in lower screen resolutions but no shortcuts. Today, however, I had a breakthrough and actually discovered it myself. I actually saw the section of keys he was pressing and started pressing random combos and finally found it:

Ctrl + Fn + Space bar

Ta-Da!Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-54985991109851419552007-03-06T00:36:00.000-06:002007-03-06T01:00:29.172-06:00Night Sky
We got to see the end of the eclipse on Saturday. We didn't get to see the moon when it made its appearance on the horizon, though. We were at mass (we always go on Saturday evenings--it's just a better time for my son). When we got home, my husband insisted on taking the pictures, so I didn't get to. It's funny because he kept asking me what to do, lol! A lot of them turned out underexposed (too dark). Some turned out overexposed (too light). Many were blurry! But, a few turned out ok. That's not his fault, though. Our camera is a DSLR (digital single lens reflex). It allows us to do all kinds of cool things like slow the shutter speed (which you have to do in nighttime pictures so they don't turn out so dark you can't see them) or speed it up (for action shots) and increase or decrease the aperture (make the whole picture clear or fuzz up the background). We still are newbies and have to experiment a lot in order to get good shots. For example, one of the pictures we took of the eclipse (with a 5 second shutter speed) actually looks like we took it during the daytime, and the moon looks like the sun.

There's also a cool flare on the moon there. There's going to be a total lunar eclipse this Saturday. The only caveat is that it will start before the moon rises here. So, it will either rise totally eclipsed or partially. That'll make for some moonrise! I'm going to try to take pictures of it although I doubt my telephoto lens zooms enough for something truly spectacular. We'll see ;-)

I really need to get into the habit of blogging more often. I'm such a slacker, lol!Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-64273489513733338092007-02-14T14:41:00.000-06:002007-02-14T15:04:39.848-06:00My Sunny ValentineMy son is the best Valentine. He's always so happy to see me, even when he's sick (yep, today is one of those days). I just adore his smile and love to listen to all he tells me. And he tells me a LOT :-) This is a great time to have a 10 month old.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-78613356647538843362007-02-13T15:22:00.000-06:002007-02-10T12:33:34.728-06:00My MindMy mind is definitely messing with me. I could be pregnant, and sometimes it feels like I am. I'm always tired, there's some spotting (could be implantation bleeding?). Then again, I could just want to be pregnant so bad that I'm imagining things. Or I'm coming down with something. It's too early to test--I still have a week to go. Waiting sucks!

It's funny, I actually didn't want another baby so soon. I wanted to wait at least another few years, but now that it could be...I think I'll actually be upset if I'm not with child.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-21414459729514987752007-02-05T11:18:00.000-06:002007-02-05T11:38:48.392-06:00SlooooooowIt's been a while since I last wrote. And I probably wouldn't have written today if it weren't for a very sweet online friend of mine. I've just been slow lately, and it doesn't help that my little guy is very jealous of my laptop.

Speaking of laptops, mine is really slow now too. It's like it knows the new operating system, Vista, is out and feels inadequate in comparison. Hee-hee, just kidding. Actually, this lappy is pretty old as far as laptops are concerned (approaching 3 years!). I love this thing though--and will stick with it until it whirrs its last whirr. It's a Toshiba Satellite M35-S320, and it is a lovely compy. I'd recommend this baby to anyone. I've never had a problem with it, and there's probably never been a day when it hasn't been turned on since we got it. Well, I guess that's inevitable when it has two computer scientist "parents" and a little computer scientist-in-training "brother!"Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-59542414786652169132006-12-18T22:29:00.000-06:002006-12-18T22:36:18.763-06:00What Winter?I live in the South, by the Gulf of Mexico. It's normally pretty warm around here year-round, relatively. Take, for instance, right now. I think the normals for this time of the year are high 60F, low 40F. Not bad considering this is the time for snow in much of the country. But we are having some record highs lately. Temps flirting with 80! I know, I know, some people would give their eye-teeth for such pleasant temperatures. However, 2 to 2.5 weeks ago we were having record lows--I think it went all the way down to 24F, with highs only in the mid-40s. I'm so glad I'm escaping this erratic weather pattern and going to the other side of the world in a few days.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-47599880991664830042006-12-17T19:04:00.000-06:002006-12-17T19:34:16.527-06:00UPSUPS has really gotten on my nerves this Christmas season. There are a couple of things that have gone awry with their delivery process.

The first is totally wacko, why-are-they-such-greedy-pigs behavior. My husband chose to use their services in sending a package to Canada. He sold something on E-bay and wanted it at its destination quickly. They charged him a certain amount, and we thought that would be the end of it. Well, it turns out that they don't do deliveries in Canada: they hire some other company to complete the delivery. That in itself is not a problem, but the fact that they were going to charge the guy at the end a whole bunch more money (I'm thinking the sum was somewhere near $20 or so) in order for him to get the package is ridiculous. They should have been up-front about the extra delivery charges. The guy that had won the auction sent it back, refusing delivery. They then returned the package and tried to charge my husband a non-delivery return fee! WTF?! He proceeded to finish the transaction using the USPS.

They weren't done with us yet, though. Friday, they claimed to have tried to deliver a package to us 3 times and left a note on the final try. I don't believe that crap. I was home all day until my husband came home from work. We went for a walk that probably lasted 45 minutes. We didn't get the note until after our walk. How could they try to deliver 3 times in 45 mins? So my husband tries to call them. Boy was that hard. He called up all the local UPS stores and gets the run-around. Nobody knows where it is. He calls up the main customer service number, and they say they'll track it down. It will go to the main office across town. So on Saturday, my husband goes down to the office. The truck that has the package is in the back, locked up. Apparently no one on site can open it up. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. What is up with that? They can't deliver it until Monday. Double grrrrrrrr. We needed that package because it contained something for my Dad, who we were going to visit on Saturday. We had to go without the package. At least it wasn't an emergency or anything. We'd be really mad then.

So, there you have it. We're never using UPS again. Good news for the USPS, Fed-Ex, and DHL though.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-56697261755706000022006-12-16T12:32:00.000-06:002006-12-16T12:38:16.411-06:00Chocolate IIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....I just tasted the coconut Kisses. Oh. My. Goodness! I love them. Of course they do have their drawbacks. They melt really easily and have somewhat of a bitter aftertaste. All that aside, they taste like a Mounds bar, except smaller.

On the same subject, my husband did something very evil last night. He went out and bought some mint chocolate Kisses. I adore those things. With all this chocolate in the house, how the heck am I supposed to lose weight? How many calories are burnt typing? Maybe I've found a new weightloss plan....eat a Kiss, type 5 million words.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-35348760794536986822006-12-16T00:17:00.000-06:002006-12-16T00:28:24.171-06:00ChocolateI love chocolate. Today, I went to the store to buy some mint M&Ms. Those things are quite addictive. I can eat a whole bag (they don't come in single serving bags either)! Anyway, I go to buy some of those delicious treats and I am seduced by the other yummy confections in the aisle. There are coconut Kisses, macadamia nut Kisses, candy cane Kisses, mint Hershey's Nuggets, mint Hershey's Miniatures variety packs.....I would've bought the whole aisle if my husband hadn't been there with me. I did get the M&Ms and a couple of the Kisses (coconut and macadamia nut). I've tried the macadamia nut already. It's pretty good: a dark chocolate with Mauna Loa macadamia nuts. I am a huge fan of dark chocolate (the darker the better in my book), and as far as dark chocolate goes I'd have to say I find this one mediocre. It's a little on the sweet side, so if you like dark chocolate without the bite, you'll probably love it. I haven't tried the coconut ones yet (I'm watching my weight hee-hee!).Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-33280343150942985842006-12-14T17:01:00.000-06:002006-12-14T17:09:13.873-06:00Party!Tonight is the first Christmas party we're going to this season. It's an office party. It's a little on the strange side that we're going, however. It's my husband's old office's party. He works for our local university and switched departments. This is a party for his old department (the new department's party is this Saturday). It's weird going to a party with people my husband no longer works with. However, it also speaks volumes about how much they miss him and loved working with him--he worked with them since the year 2000. They may have ulterior motives though, lol. I'm sure the real reason why we're invited is because everyone wants to see how our little boy is growing up. Well, who could blame them? He is cute as a button, if I do say so myself :-PSuzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-27721649071989682372006-12-13T23:16:00.000-06:002006-12-13T23:22:05.237-06:00It's Late! It's 11:16pm, and I am just now getting on the Internet. My home page is Google, and I use the personalized home, where I have the latest news stories and "Today in History." Well, on the first line of today in history, it says we're having the Geminid meteor shower! Oh boy, I love meteor showers. I don't think I'll be going outside though--because it's cloudy out. Too bad--the weather has been really freaky lately, and it's actually not too cold out. Well, maybe I'll take a peak tomorrow. I hope it's clear then...Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-52186301920599861432006-12-12T23:29:00.000-06:002006-12-12T23:50:59.153-06:00Wrapping It UpI've been wrapping packages all day. I wouldn't have thought it would be an all-day task, but having a baby makes even the quickest of activities 10 times longer. That's right. He wanted to play with everything. Fortunately, he didn't tear anything or eat anything. I really do have the best of babies. He's mild-mannered and loves people. He's as curious as the next baby his age and mobile to boot, which makes keeping an eye on him mandatory at all times and cuts down on my Internet time. I'm not complaining, though. I'd much rather be playing with him than staring at a screen all day ;-)Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-424360063116841132006-12-09T13:20:00.000-06:002006-12-09T13:33:28.705-06:00SilenceI can't stand silence. I must have some kind of noise around. That is why I normally have the TV on all the time. Bad habit, I know. While I was studying last week, however, I couldn't have the TV on at all or I would watch it. The next best thing is the radio, so on it went. I had to go surfing to find something that wasn't distracting. Our Top 40 station pretty much only plays rap, so that was out of the question entirely. There were a few stations playing Christmas music, but I love to sing along, so they were as distracting as the Top 40 channel. I finally came across a classical music channel that is broadcast from a local private university. Jackpot! There is something about that kind of music that really is conducive to studying and learning.

The reason why I mentioned this is because I haven't even watched any TV since my final. Instead, I am listening to the classical channel. This music is timeless, and I never get tired of it. My music appreciation teacher would be so proud ;-DSuzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-28332650507278326042006-12-07T23:42:00.000-06:002006-12-07T23:50:18.091-06:00Done!Woo Hoo! I'm finished! After all that studying and hard work, I'm done, done, done!!!!!!!! I have been in school since 1986, and tonight I had my last final ever. Amazing. And surreal. I had just gotten finished writing a nice tribute to Weffriddles when I clicked on something that made my post disappear. Strange. And to top it off, my wysiwyg editor is gone.

Oh where oh where has my editor gone? I think it has something to do with the weather, which has been abnormally hot (flirting with 80) and humid (80% and higher) lately. Yesterday and the day before were grey and cloudy, and the air was thick with wetness. Blech, blech, blech!

Today, however, is a new day. It is sunny and clear, and the temperatures are only in the 50's! What a great start to a fresh, new month. I only hope it remains that way.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-65677718928776452052006-11-30T16:03:00.000-06:002006-11-30T17:05:21.402-06:00TimeI am running short on time! I can't believe it's been almost a week since my last post. So, let's see...

It took me 3 whole days to get my tree up! I have a fake pre-lit tree that is only a year old. When we took it out of the box and got it up, the bottom half didn't light up. I thought something was wrong with the light string or the lights, so I went out and bought a little Christmas lights bulb tester. By the time I got back I was too tired to fool with the tree. The next day, I set up the bulb tester but found that there wasn't a problem with those bulbs; I simply didn't have that string plugged in--duh! Well, at least my money didn't go to waste--there actually were two dead bulbs elsewhere. By the time I got done messing with the lights I was too tired to bother with the ornaments. Finally, on day three, I put up the ornaments and a little gate to prevent my boy from eating/climbing the tree and pulling down ornaments.

Graduate school is hard work! I had a team project/paper due, so it's been eating up a lot of my time. I have excellent teammates, though, so I wasn't stuck doing things all by myself or anything--thank Goodness! My final is coming up (a week from today), so I've got reading and vocabulary to catch up on.

My boy is more mobile than ever! He's crawling all over the place at record speed, and he's turned into a goat. That's right, he wants to eat every little piece of paper he can get his hands on. He managed to find a leaf the other day and almost choked on it. So I can't keep my eyes off him for a second. I'm really lucky that he's not too interested in our tree. Hopefully, it won't spark his interest any time soon.

So that's where my time has gone. I'll be glad when my final is over. School is seriously taking a big bite of my baby and holiday time.Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-84834926550050956562006-11-25T02:07:00.000-06:002006-11-25T02:34:43.493-06:00Long DayLast night my little guy kept me up because he wasn't at home in his own bed (we were at my parents' house). He really doesn't like being away from his own house. Any way, being up half the night meant there was no way I'd be waking up before dawn to get to all those "doorbuster" sales. Not that I was even planning on it--I've been there, done that and just didn't want to even try to do it with an 8 month old in tow.

On the way home from my parents' house, though, we decided to drop by a shopping center. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of chaos. Yes, there were lots of people there but not an insane amount. And all the shops were in order. There weren't any stores that had been picked bare or messes anywhere. I wouldn't have been at all surprised to find that all the clearance and on-sale items had been picked away (we didn't get there until about 11:00). Now, I'm pretty sure that if we had stopped at the shopping mall closer to our house it would have been a completely different story. At any rate, I got some nice shirts for only $4.50. Score :-) Santa was even there, so my little guy got to take a picture with him. Double Score :-D We ended up spending the rest of the day there and didn't even get home until the sun had set. I suppose I should tell you that this particular shopping center is relatively new--it's maybe a year or two old. I'm sure that if we give it some time it'll be just as packed and disordered as the mall.

After getting home, we invited some friends over for dinner and games. We had so much fun that they didn't even leave until after midnight. I'm not complaining. It was an A+ day overall.

Tomorrow I'm putting my tree up. It's Christmas season, baby!Suzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-13832067227803970772006-11-24T00:18:00.000-06:002006-11-24T00:26:35.293-06:00ThanksgivingI have never really pigged out on Thanksgiving--not that there's anything wrong with that. After all, it is a time for some mighty fine eats! I suppose it's better that I don't stuff myself silly because I'm a little heavier than I've ever been this time of year due to my baby. One of my online friends once said that it took us 9 months to put it all on, it should take 9 months to take it off. Uh-oh, I'm reaching my grace period (it's up Dec 27)!

Ummmmmmm.....I guess I'd better get off the computer and start moving my lazy bum :-PSuzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341345884349174227.post-72860494092716558692006-11-21T23:46:00.000-06:002006-11-21T23:56:50.522-06:00Makes My Heart WarmMy baby boy is almost 8 months old, and they say that when they say words like "Mama" or "Dada" at that age they don't know what they're talking about yet.

I don't know about that, though. My son almost always says "Mama" when he's hungry and wants some milk. I nurse, so he only gets milk from me. It's possible that he thinks that "Mama" means "milk," but still he's equating the spoken word with something in real life. No matter what he thinks it means, it always makes me feel special. You don't know how sweet that word is until you hear it come out of your own little one's mouth.

He also seems to understand what the word "eat" means. Whenever my husband or I ask him if he wants to eat, he makes his hungry noise and gets all excited. I'm telling you this little guy definitely takes after his Dad, who is every buffet's worse nightmare ;-DSuzanne :-)http://www.blogger.com/profile/13877881174058682555noreply@blogger.com1
